![]() ![]() But that's my fault for chopping up a 2014 I suppose. Came out looking a little cleaner even though I'm not the biggest fan of a saddle bag, much less one that's got so much shit in it now there's probably only room left a shirt and a drink. You can only thin a CAN-BUS harness down so much so I extended what I had to and put all my junk in a single side bag. No way (that I could find) to squeeze a battery, oil tank, and all the electrical junk from an EFI bike in a space that small. ![]() I also cut the battery tray mount off mine. That would have saved me a little bearing work since my '14 has 1in and not 3/4 but no biggie. I do like how David Bird offers 1in axle plates. I know several people have had complaints with some of their other stuff over the years since a lot of it comes from overseas. I was going to go with the David Bird one but I got a deal on the V-twin. Bought mine "used" but it had a V-twin tag on it still. Looks just like the one I put on my bike. Pretty sure the one Bitter End is selling is from V-twin MFG. Has anybody used a David Bird or Led Sled model? (most of the pics in this thread are dead links ) Personally, I think Led Sled Customs looks the nicest, but probably requires the most skill or equipment to ensure a proper, square fit. Note: Neck bearings and frame cups sold separately. Then again, the top wishbone rails are mated to a gusset and not frame tubing which is not as strong a bond. You still need to ensure squareness, but I do think this is nice way for the home fabricator to make sure it's seated properly. Of course, gussets are always a good idea.īitter End Old School Choppers in Des Moines, IA offers an interesting solution where the bottom rails of the stock sub-frame sit flat in large notches on the hardtail while the top wishbone rails of the hardtail mates with the stock frame under the seat wishbone gusset. Additionally, two tubes slugged together are stronger than a notched tube without the use of gussets. I think most would agree that slugs are preferable for the home fabricator since they're easier to fit up and ensure the finished frame is straight compared to notched tubing. I previously used one of Bird's hardtails for my XS650 because I could pick the stretch and drop, and it is very well-constructed however, one of the pitfalls I've noticed with all rubber-mount Sportster hardtails is that they do not utilize slugs. The bottom section also appears to mate up to the stock frame pretty square making home fabrication simpler. It looks like it has adjustable cross pieces that need finish welding, but with these you can decide exactly where you want them to better mount a fender or whatever. Hopping on the bandwagon a little late, but hopefully it will promote some more conversation.ĭavid Bird now makes a model for rubber-mount Sportsters that you can buy on Lowbrow. ![]()
